I'm referring to FLL (First Lego League) as Sr.FLL because FLL and a Jr.FLL gets confusing. Sr.FLL is...
THE NEXT STEP!! A robotics program for a team of up to 10 kids (4th - 8th grade aged 9 to 14) "No team member may be outside the maximum allowed age in your region prior to January 1 of the year the Challenge is released." It's designed to get kids excited about science & technology & teach them employment and life skills. First Lego League Official Website (Click to enter) Every September FLL releases a new Challenge based on a real-world scientific topic. Previous years themed challenges include climate, nanotechnology, transportation, and medicine. There are two parts to the competition: the Robot Game and the Project.
1) Teams program an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game)
2) Develop and present a solution to a problem they have identified (Project).
3) Perform an 'on the spot' challenge for the reviewers.
Teams compete at Regional Tournaments, may go on to Regional Championship Tournaments, and State Championships is a possibility. The system teams use to build their robot is called Lego Mindstorms. Hold your cursor over Sr.FLL pull-down to see a list of possible team jobs.

Lego Mindstorms is...
Jr. FLL team "Turbo Builders" checking out the Sr.FLL tournament.
...a line of programmable robotic construction toys manufactured by Lego. The kit contains sensors, motor, programmable brick, wheels, and cables. We have the old version, released on August 5, 2009, called Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0. The latest release is EV3 and I want one REALLY badly. (For my kids, of course).
For 4th - 8th grade.
